Persuasive Legal Writing and Ethical Considerations (2-6-25)
The primary goal of the training is to assist newly hired attorneys in understanding the structure and writing approach involved in persuasive legal writing ("writing to win"). We will walk participants through the most common organizational tools used in legal writing (IRAC, CRAC, etc.). Since structure and organization alone does not necessarily make for persuasive or effective legal writing, we will also cover a number of writing approaches that lawyers should be mindful of (e.g., clarity, brevity, avoiding long or complicated sentences, effective use of preliminary statements, writing so that judges can understand the gist of your case quickly given their limited bandwidth, etc.).
Throughout the training, we will reference examples of good legal writing and will also discuss some ethical considerations applicable to legal writing.
