You must complete 32 hours of CLE training in the two years following your admission to the New York State bar. If you have been admitted for more than two years, you must complete 24 credit hours during every two year registration period.
If you are an attorney who has been admitted to the New York State bar for more than two years, you need 4 hours of ethics credits every two years. If you are a newly-admitted attorney, the requirements are much more specific: of the 16 hours to be completed in each of your first two years, 3 hours must be in Ethics and Professionalism; 6 hours must be in the category of Skills; and 7 hours must be in the categories of Law Practice Management and/or Areas of Professional Practice.
Credit shall be awarded only for attendance at an entire course or program, or for attendance at an entire session of a course or program. No credit shall be awarded for attending a portion of a course or a portion of a session.
No CLE credit hours may be earned for repeating the same course or program, in any format, even if the course or program is repeated in the subsequent reporting cycle.
You can, however, get credit for taking a similar class that provides updated information on the changes in the law.
Attorneys who earn more than 16 credit hours in the first year may carry eight excess hours over to the second year. Attorneys who earn more than 16 credit hours in the second year may carry up to six excess hours over to the next reporting cycle.
Newly admitted attorneys can earn transitional CLE credit hours for Skills via traditional live classroom training or by attendance at a fully interactive videoconference. Newly admitted attorneys can earn Ethics and Professionalism credit via traditional live classroom setting, by attendance at a fully interactive videoconference, or by participation in the live simultaneous transmission of a live program, such as a webinar or teleconference, where audience questions are allowed during the program (synchronous interactivity). If there is no opportunity for questions during the program, then a newly admitted attorney may not earn Ethics and Professionalism credit for the program. All other attorneys (not newly admitted) can obtain CLE credit for classes other than live trainings.
