Preparing for Asylum Office Interviews (1-18-24)

This training will cover filing procedures at the Bethpage and Newark Asylum Offices, best practices for preparing effective asylum office submissions, tips for how to prepare the client to testify, the attorney’s role and how to troubleshoot common issues that may arise. We will conclude with the next steps after the asylum interview concludes. The training will focus on the practical aspects of preparing for asylum interviews at the Bethpage and Newark asylum offices. Although we will generally touch on elements of asylum law, the training will not include an in-depth discussion of asylum eligibility.

About the Faculty

    Stephanie Cordero (Speaker)

    Stephanie (she/her) is the Director of the Immigrants' Rights and Advocacy Project at Brooklyn Legal Services. Before joining BLS in August 2021, she was a staff attorney in the Immigration Law Unit of the Legal Aid Society since 2014. As part of the inaugural class of the Immigrant Justice Corps Fellowship, Stephanie represented women and children detained at the Karnes Detention Center in Texas in their credible fear interviews and reviews of credible fear determinations by the San Antonio Immigration Court. While at Legal Aid, she specialized in representing unaccompanied minors before EOIR, USCIS and New York Family Court primarily in applications for asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. She is a 2014 graduate of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and a 2012-2013 alumna of the Kathryn O Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic. While in law school, Stephanie completed immigration internships at the East Bay Community Law Center and Brooklyn Defender Services. She also interned at LatinoJustice, PRLDF and with the Honorable Dora L. Irizarry of the Eastern District of New York.

    Dave Wilkins (Speaker)

    Dave Wilkins (he, him) is the Director of Immigration and LGBTQ/HIV+ Advocacy at Staten Island Legal Services. Before joining Legal Services NYC, he was an Asylum Officer at the Newark Asylum Office. He was an Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow and a Staff Attorney at Central American Legal Assistance in Brooklyn, where his practice focused on representing Central American asylum seekers in removal proceedings. He received his JD from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was an advocate in and research assistant for the Center for Applied Legal Studies clinic and received a certificate in Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies.
