Appellate Immigration Litigation

Legal Services NYC and Central American Legal Assistance is proud to present this training on litigating immigration claims at the appellate level. In this training, the instructors will focus on how to preserve issues for appeal, starting from early client contacts, through preliminary hearings, through the merits hearing, all the way up to Circuit Court litigation. We’ll cover some trial advocacy and preparation skills with an emphasis on issue preservation, the nuts and bolts of appeals, analyzing decisions by the Immigration Judge , brief writing, Petitions for Review, and oral argument at the Circuit Court.

About the Faculty

    Dave Wilkins (Speaker)

    Dave Wilkins (he, him) is the Director of Immigration and LGBTQ/HIV+ Advocacy at Staten Island Legal Services. Before joining Legal Services NYC, he was an Asylum Officer at the Newark Asylum Office. He was an Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow and a Staff Attorney at Central American Legal Assistance in Brooklyn, where his practice focused on representing Central American asylum seekers in removal proceedings. He received his JD from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was an advocate in and research assistant for the Center for Applied Legal Studies clinic and received a certificate in Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies.
