Wills & Legal Services Advocacy

Come learn about the importance of understanding wills to advocate for your legal services clients. In this session, faculty will discuss the reasons for creating a will, requirements for valid wills, common pitfalls in will drafting, the probate process and legal ethics. By the end of this session, you’ll know:

  • why people need wills;
  • how to draft a simple will that will withstand probate;
  • how the probate process works;
  • what to include in a will for clients with low incomes; and
  • how to spot ethical considerations in the will drafting process.

About the Faculty

    Timothy Ameres (Speaker)

    Timothy J. Ameres, Esq., has been the Chief Probate Clerk in New York County Surrogate's Court since April, 2000. He was first hired in November 1993, as a Court Officer in Bronx Family Court. He has worked in Family Court, Supreme Court, and the Surrogate's Court earning promotions along the way. In 2006, he graduated from New York Law School and was admitted to the New York State Bar later that year. He has experience supervising the Accounting Department as well as the Miscellaneous Department in Surrogate's Court.

    Diana Sanabria (Speaker)

    Diana Sanabria, Esq. has been the Chief Clerk in New York County Surrogate’s Court since April, 2011.  She is a graduate of CUNY Law School and was a Public Defender at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem.  From 1996 to 2001, she was the Director of Student Affairs at Fordham Law School. In 2001, she was the Director of Administration at MFY Legal Services and then Manhattan Legal Services, for almost ten years.  She currently sits on the Board of Directors of Manhattan Legal Services.  She has come full circle in her career as a lawyer; while in law school, she was a student of the Wills, Trusts and Estates Clinic where she helped low income residents write wills and advised them on estate matters.

    Thomas Sciacca (Speaker)

    Thomas Sciacca is the Member/Manager of the Law Offices of Thomas Sciacca, PLLC, where he focuses on trusts and estates, estate planning, estate planning of the LGBT community, estate planning for people with disabilities, Surrogate's Court proceedings and litigation, Article 81 Guardianship proceedings, and appellate practice. Tom is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at New York University in the Diploma Program in Paralegal Studies and the Certificate Program in U.S. Law and Methodologies, and is an Instructor in Pace Law School's New Directions Program, where he teaches a seminar on trusts and estates law. Tom is a graduate of Pace University School of Law, J.D., and New York University School of Law, LLM.
