Fundamentals of Surrogate's Court Practice

Interested in learning more about wills and estates for effective legal services advocacy for your clients? Not sure how best to assist clients before Surrogate’s Court? Not sure what happens in Surrogate’s Court? Come to this session and learn about the role of Surrogate’s Court, the kinds of cases heard before the Court, the considerations for small estates (of less than $30,000) or voluntary estate administration, and how to obtain letters of administration and testamentary letters. At the conclusion of the session, you’ll know more about crucial estate matters to better advocate for clients who have low incomes, become familiar with key forms and important terminology, and learn where to find important resources on wills and estates.

About the Faculty

    Timothy Ameres (Speaker)

    Timothy J. Ameres, Esq., has been the Chief Probate Clerk in New York County Surrogate's Court since April, 2000. He was first hired in November 1993, as a Court Officer in Bronx Family Court. He has worked in Family Court, Supreme Court, and the Surrogate's Court earning promotions along the way. In 2006, he graduated from New York Law School and was admitted to the New York State Bar later that year. He has experience supervising the Accounting Department as well as the Miscellaneous Department in Surrogate's Court.

    Diana Sanabria (Speaker)

    Diana Sanabria, Esq. has been the Chief Clerk in New York County Surrogate’s Court since April, 2011.  She is a graduate of CUNY Law School and was a Public Defender at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem.  From 1996 to 2001, she was the Director of Student Affairs at Fordham Law School. In 2001, she was the Director of Administration at MFY Legal Services and then Manhattan Legal Services, for almost ten years.  She currently sits on the Board of Directors of Manhattan Legal Services.  She has come full circle in her career as a lawyer; while in law school, she was a student of the Wills, Trusts and Estates Clinic where she helped low income residents write wills and advised them on estate matters.
