New Americans: Screening for Naturalization Eligibility
This training is designed for attorneys and others interested in helping clients become U.S. citizens. No prior experience in immigration law is required. Participants will be provided with a comprehensive overview of the naturalization process, including:
• Eligibility requirements, including technical, residential, language and good moral character;
• Problem areas, such as prior fraud, tax or criminal issues;
• Special classes of applicants, such as children and veterans;
• Preparing and assembling the application materials, including how to complete a fee waiver;
• Preparing yourself and the client for the naturalization interview;
• The appeals process; and
• Working with low-income clients.
After the training participants will be ready to take on a naturalization case from the initial client meeting through the interview process and beyond. All cases will be pre-screened and should require approximately 20 hours of work over a 6-12 month period. Attorneys from Legal Services NYC will be available to provide mentorship and answer questions at any time during the process.
