Representing LGBTQ/H Asylum-Seekers: A How-To Guide
Piibe Jogi, Staff Attorney at Immigration Equality—an NGO that strives to improve the lives of LGBTQ and HIV+ immigrants—will provide advocates with the knowledge base necessary to represent LGBTQ/H persons fearing persecution in their applications for asylum. In this presentation, attendees will come to understand the standards set by the Refugee Convention as incorporated into domestic law, the legal and administrative processes involved in seeking asylum both affirmatively and defensively, the relative benefits and limitations of asylum as compared with other forms of immigration relief, and the nuances involved in (and sensitivity required by) LGBTQ/H claims. At the end of the presentation, attendees should feel empowered to take on LGBTQ/H asylum cases—and, in so doing, to help provide a path to safety and a brighter future for some of the world’s most vulnerable citizens.
