Fundamentals of Special Education Law in NYC

This class will cover all that you ever wanted to know about the basics of special education law in New York City. The trainers will focus on the general requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and New York State Education Law for students with disabilities. The program is geared for attorneys, paralegals and  lay advocates who are new to the practice of education law or who are looking for a refresher.

    Tara Lambert (Speaker)

    ? Tara is Director of the Social Work Unit at Bronx Legal Services where she first joined as a staff member in 2005. Within her current role Tara manages Bronx Legal Services? social work program, provides direct supervision to four MSW social work staff, and oversees Bronx Legal Services? professional training and internship program for graduate level social work students. In 2016 Tara organized the first LSNYC Indigenous Affinity Group as part of Legal Services DEIB initiative, and has participated in the provision of many trainings related to the interdisciplinary practice of social work & law over the past 16 years. Tara holds a Master of Social Work degree from Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work, a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Social Work from New York University, and certification in advanced social work case management (C-ASWCM) through the National Association of Social Workers. Tara?s career was cultivated through the provision of trauma informed, person centered services. She has practiced in community-based programs for over 25yrs in rural and urban settings as a case manager, counselor, advocate, educator, consultant, community organizer, and administrator with an emphasis on individual & community empowerment. Tara is currently studying healing & wellness through knowledge of natural medicines, herbalism, somatic experiencing involving nature and the outdoors, and social care farming.

    Nelson Mar (Speaker)

    Nelson Mar is a senior staff attorney at Bronx Legal Services where he has worked for the last twenty one years. His practice includes Education Law with prior experience in Social Security Disability, labor/employment and community economic development. Nelson is also the coordinator for the Legal Services NYC’s citywide Education Law Task Force and previously the chair of the Education Law Committee with the New York County Lawyer’s Association (NYCLA). Nelson is a member of the Mayor’s School Safety Community Partnership Committee and previously a subcommittee member of Mayor de Blasio’s School Climate Leadership Team which produced significant recommendations on improving school climate in New York City’s public schools.
